Who is Jesus?

For thousands of years, the people of Israel had been looking for their prophesied Messiah. Mothers hoped that they would be the one to have this special child.

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, she was awed and overwhelmed to find out that she was going to be the mother of the Messiah. Through God’s power, Mary became pregnant with God’s Son. Mary’s life from then on was not to be an easy one, and neither was Jesus’. Nine months later, in the small town of Bethlehem, amid the animals in a smelly manger, God’s Son was born! When the king at that time heard rumors that a Savior had been born, he was jealous and tried to kill the baby. Jesus was kept safe when Mary and her husband, Joseph, escaped to Egypt.

By the age of 12, Jesus was impressing Israel’s religious scholars with his knowledge of God’s word. Joseph, who acted as Jesus’ human father, was a carpenter; growing up Jesus worked hard at his side. At the age of 30, Jesus was publically baptized and began to gather followers. These followers weren’t the rich and powerful; they were the ordinary citizens who worked hard for their living—just like you and me!

For three and a half years, Jesus traveled throughout Israel, preaching the wonderful news of God’s Kingdom, healing the sick, and caring for the needy. He was brutally crucified by religious and political leaders who were jealous of the influence he was having on the nation. God raised him up after three days and made him immortal. Throughout his earthly years, Jesus always did what was right and never sinned. He now works at God’s right hand, waiting for the time when God has chosen to set up a Kingdom where Jesus will be king!

"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." (Luke 1:31-33 ESV)

How do I vote for Jesus?

Just like in any election, we should know a little bit about the candidate before we make our choice.

You might already know a lot about Jesus. Or you might know nothing. Both are okay! The best way to start getting to know what Jesus is like and whether he will be a good king is to read the Bible. If you are tired of the deceptive politics of today, consider that Jesus might have something much better to offer. Unlike other candidates, Jesus doesn’t rely on campaigns and deception to win his people. If you want to know more about what Jesus’ vision is click here.

Once you have come to the realization that Jesus will make a wonderful King, you can choose him by getting baptized and living your life to follow him. Unlike many leaders, Jesus doesn’t ask his servants to accomplish grand feats or unheard of wonders. All he asks is that we repent and follow after his example. When the apostle Peter is asked what was needed for salvation, he tells the people this:

"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." (Acts 2:38 ESV)
